I was King

I was King is a biographical memoir written by the English author and poet Stephen Southwold, published in 1932. The work emerged during a prolific period of Southwold's career, in which he published under numerous pseudonyms, including Neil Bell. The book reflects the literary conventions of early 20th-century biographical fiction, focusing on narrative exploration of personal authority and the complexities of status.

The design and production of this title align with the mid-1930s British publishing aesthetic, characterized by modest, often cloth-bound hardcovers intended for a growing middle-class reading public. As a title within Southwold's expansive body of work, it was received as a contribution to the popular fiction landscape of the interwar era, though it remains a deeper cut for collectors interested in the extensive bibliography of an author who thrived on prolific output and genre experimentation.
