Ikkyuu-san to Yancha Hime

Ikkyuu-san to Yancha Hime, released in 1978, is a feature-length animated film produced by Toei Animation as part of the expansion of the popular Ikkyuu-san television series. The series itself was inspired by the life of the historical 15th-century Zen monk Ikkyū Sōjun, reimagined as a precocious and clever young boy residing at the Ankoku-ji Temple. The film was created during the height of the series' popularity to capitalize on the character's appeal, offering a standalone narrative that maintains the whimsical and educational tone established by the original weekly broadcasts.

The production design reflects the distinctive house style of Toei Animation’s family-oriented output during the late 1970s, characterized by simple, expressive character line work and bright, accessible aesthetics. Directed by Yoshiyuki Kuroda, the film retains the core creative team responsible for the television series, ensuring consistency for a young audience. It was received as a straightforward, lighthearted extension of the show, providing fans of the period with a theatrical opportunity to see their favorite characters navigating a new, feature-length challenge in the historical Muromachi setting.
