Ishikeri-Kicking Rocks

Ishikeri-Kicking Rocks was produced by students at the Tokyo University of the Arts, or Geidai, under the guidance of renowned animator Yuichi Ito. The short film serves as a primary example of the university's experimental animation program, which encourages students to explore tactile storytelling and traditional techniques within a contemporary digital landscape. Created as a graduation project, the work reflects the institution's commitment to fostering a distinct, auteur-driven aesthetic that prioritizes artistic vision over commercial mass-market appeal.

The design of the film centers on a minimalist, observational style that captures the rhythmic nature of childhood play. By focusing on the simple, repetitive act of a hopscotch-like game, the animators aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and kinetic simplicity. Upon its release, the film was well-received within the international animation festival circuit, praised by critics for its understated beauty and the proficiency of its young creators in translating mundane movements into a compelling, rhythmic visual narrative.
