Where it came from
I shall never return is an original video animation released in 1994, produced by J.C.Staff during a period when the studio was building its reputation for technical proficiency in the direct-to-video market. It stands as a representative example of 1990s character-driven anime, capturing the era's focus on intimate, atmospheric storytelling before the shift toward more commercially broad television series.
The production reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-1990s, characterized by hand-drawn cel animation and a deliberate, moody pacing. Designed to appeal to a growing audience of animation enthusiasts who favored standalone narratives over lengthy serials, the work was received as a stylistic exploration of its themes, though it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive filmography.
