Where it came from
Itsudatte My Santa! was released in 2005 as a two-episode original video animation (OVA) produced by studio TNK. Adapted from the manga by Ken Akamatsu, the story centers on a cynical protagonist named Santa who despises the holiday season until he meets Mai, a clumsy trainee Santa Claus. The production arrived at a time when short-format holiday-themed anime were gaining traction, aiming to distill the lighthearted romance and fantasy elements typical of Akamatsu's signature style into a concise, festive narrative.
The adaptation was directed by Noriyoshi Nakamura, who focused on capturing the whimsical, character-driven energy of the source material. While the project was a smaller-scale release compared to the sprawling television series adaptations of Akamatsu's other works, it was received as a charming curiosity by fans of his early-2000s oeuvre. The design aesthetic remains faithful to the era's digital animation transition, emphasizing expressive character silhouettes and the cozy, sentimental atmosphere central to its Christmas-centric theme.
