Where it came from
Jade was produced by Geidai Animation, the student-led studio associated with the Tokyo University of the Arts. Established to foster professional-grade output from graduate students, the studio serves as a bridge between academic animation studies and the independent commercial film industry. The project emerged from this rigorous conservatory environment, reflecting a focus on traditional cel aesthetics and experimental narrative structures favored by the faculty.
The production sought to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary storytelling, emphasizing deliberate pacing and intricate line work characteristic of Geidai's house style. By prioritizing artisanal craftsmanship over mass-market trends, the film was designed to appeal to festival audiences and collectors of academic animation. Upon its release, it was well-received within specialized animation circles for its technical precision and the maturity of its visual direction.
