Where it came from
Jagaimo is a character originating from the long-running NHK children's program 'Okaasan to Issho'. Introduced as part of the 'Nico Nico Pun' segment which premiered in 1982, the character represents a potato-like figure designed to appeal to a preschool audience. The segment was created to provide educational and entertainment value, utilizing puppets to teach social skills and language development through lighthearted narratives.
The character design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese children's television in the 1980s, prioritizing soft, recognizable shapes and friendly, approachable features. The puppet production was managed by NHK's internal design team, who focused on durability and performance functionality for television studio use. The character remains a nostalgic touchstone for generations of viewers who grew up watching the public broadcaster's daily morning variety block.
