Where it came from
Jean Valjean Monogatari was produced by Fuji TV as a standalone television special in 1979, serving as a condensed animated adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel Les Misérables. Released during a decade when Japanese studios were increasingly exploring Western literary canon for animation, the project sought to introduce the complex themes of social justice and redemption to a younger audience through the stylistic lens of late-seventies anime production.
The production leans on the dramatic visual conventions of the era, focusing on the character arc of the protagonist, Jean Valjean, across his transformative years. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of international literary adaptations, it is recognized for its earnest attempt to distill a massive epic into a single viewing experience, reflecting the experimental spirit of Fuji TV's programming blocks at the time.
