Jewelpet Magical Change

Jewelpet Magical Change, released in 2015, serves as the seventh installment in the long-running Jewelpet franchise, a collaboration between Sanrio and Sega Toys. Produced by Studio DEEN, this season marked a distinct tonal shift for the series, moving away from the continuity-heavy narratives of its predecessors to embrace a more episodic and surreal comedic style. The series was designed to revitalize interest in the Jewelpet characters by centering the plot on their ability to transform into humans, a departure that allowed for more playful character interactions and a heightened focus on the whimsical, vibrant aesthetic associated with the Sanrio brand.

The animation and character design for Magical Change reflected a deliberate effort to maintain visual consistency with the established Jewelpet universe while introducing new, expressive elements to suit the transformed human forms. Directed by Nobuhiro Kondo, the production aimed to appeal to a younger audience through lighthearted humor and imaginative scenarios. While the series received mixed feedback from long-term fans accustomed to the earlier lore-intensive seasons, it remains a notable example of Studio DEEN’s flexible approach to adapting character-driven intellectual properties for television.
