Where it came from
Jewelpet: Attack Travel! was released in 2022 as an ONA (Original Net Animation) featuring the iconic Jewelpet cast, characters originally conceived through a collaborative partnership between Sanrio and Sega Toys. The project represents a digital-focused continuation of the franchise, which began in 2008 with a line of character toys that each house a unique jewel. Ashi Productions took the helm for this release, aiming to maintain the franchise's enduring aesthetic of magical creatures associated with specific gemstones and personality traits.
The production sought to revitalize the brand for a modern audience by utilizing the fast-paced, episodic nature of an ONA. Design elements for the series lean into the established character models familiar to fans of the long-running television series, prioritizing high-energy animation to showcase the characters' magical abilities. As a niche installment within a vast transmedia franchise, it was received primarily by the dedicated community of collectors and long-term fans who have followed the Jewelpet evolution from toy cabinets to broadcast animation.
