Jigoku de Naze Warui

Jigoku de Naze Warui, known internationally as Why Don't You Play in Hell?, was released in 2013 as a Japanese action-comedy film written and directed by Sion Sono. The project emerged from a script Sono had reportedly been developing for over a decade, intended as a high-energy homage to the golden age of 35mm film production and the yakuza genre. The film explores the chaotic intersections of rival crime syndicates and a dedicated amateur filmmaking collective, reflecting the director's fascination with the obsessive, destructive nature of cinematic art.

The film's visual identity was crafted to capture the kinetic, hyper-stylized aesthetic that has defined Sono's career. It was received as a polarizing but distinct entry in his filmography, garnering significant attention at international film festivals like Venice and Toronto. Critics generally praised the film for its frenetic editing, vibrant color palette, and meta-commentary on the medium of film, acknowledging it as a frantic yet earnest love letter to the celluloid era.
