Jifeng Jingshe

The Jifeng Jingshe, or 'Jifeng Reading Room,' emerged as a prominent cultural landmark in Shanghai, deeply tied to the intellectual fervor of the city's independent bookstore scene. Established to serve as a sanctuary for critical thought and academic discourse, it became a focal point for readers seeking literature that occupied the space between mainstream commercial offerings and underground publications. The project was conceived as an offline hub for the Jifeng community, aiming to foster face-to-face dialogue in an increasingly digital era.

The design and philosophy of the space were centered on the principles of openness and accessibility, prioritizing a dense, curated collection of humanities and social science titles. Its creators intended for the architecture and layout to encourage lingering, with the physical environment serving as an extension of the bookstore’s intellectual mission. While the original physical location eventually closed due to shifting urban landscapes and lease complexities, the 'Jifeng' brand remains a significant historical reference point for Chinese independent bookselling and the spirit of civic intellectualism.
