Where it came from
Jigoku Sensei Nube was produced by Toei Animation and originally broadcast in Japan beginning in 1996. The series is based on the popular manga written by Sho Makura and illustrated by Takeshi Okano, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump. The story follows Meisuke Nueno, a primary school teacher with a demonic hand who protects his students from yokai and urban legends, blending elements of horror, comedy, and traditional Japanese folklore.
The series design and aesthetic draw heavily from the horror manga tropes popularized during the 1990s. Directed by Kaizawa Yukio, the adaptation was intended to balance the source material's darker supernatural imagery with the lighthearted, episodic structure common to shonen anime of the era. It was well-received for its unique premise and became a notable part of the late-90s Toei Animation catalog, solidifying its place in the genre of supernatural school-life anime.
