Where it came from
Released in 1998, the Jigoku Sensei Nube OVA series served as an extension of the popular supernatural manga and television anime produced by Toei Animation. These original video animations were developed to offer darker, standalone narratives that pushed the boundaries of the source material's horror-comedy aesthetic, catering to an audience seeking more intense supernatural encounters than the standard television broadcast allowed.
The character designs were handled by the production team at Toei, maintaining the distinct visual style of Makoto Kano and Takeshi Okano’s original manga while refining the animation quality for the direct-to-video format. The OVA series was generally well-received by fans of the franchise for its atmospheric shift, effectively utilizing the folklore-heavy premise of a teacher with a demon hand to explore classic Japanese urban legends with a heightened sense of dread.
