Provenance

Where it came from

Jing: King of Bandits - Seventh Heaven is a three-part original video animation series released in 2004, serving as a direct continuation of the 2002 television anime adaptation of Yuichi Kumakura's manga. Produced by Aniplex and animated by Studio DEEN, these OVAs were created to expand upon the surreal, high-stakes adventures of the titular 'King of Bandits.' The transition to the OVA format allowed for a slightly more polished visual presentation, maintaining the distinct, whimsical, and often dark aesthetic established in the source material.

The character design and atmospheric world-building reflect Kumakura’s signature style, which balances traditional adventure tropes with eccentric, gothic-inspired character models. By the time of the Seventh Heaven release, the franchise had garnered a dedicated cult following for its unconventional storytelling and creative setting. While the anime adaptation took liberties with the pacing and specific narrative arcs of the manga, the Seventh Heaven OVA remains a definitive piece of the early 2000s Aniplex catalog, appreciated by fans for its faithfulness to the unique tone of the original work.
