The series plays out in the Onahama district in Iwaki, in the Fukushima prefecture's coastal region.
It follows the personifications of two WW2 japanese warships, Shiokaze and Sawakaze, who worked as breakwaters in Onahama Port. In this fictional story, the 2011 earthquake pierces a worm hole in the spacetime continuum, starting an invasion from another dimension.

Where it came from
Jinryoku Senkan!? Shiokaze Sawakaze was released in 2017 as a collaborative project between the anime studio Gainax and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The short film was produced as part of an initiative to promote interest in the Maritime Self-Defense Force among younger demographics, utilizing the studio’s signature high-energy aesthetic to dramatize the duties of a naval crew.
The production leans into the classic mecha tropes Gainax is famous for, reimagining naval vessels as anthropomorphic entities or power-suits. While the design work follows the studio's established style of bold lines and dynamic action, the project serves primarily as an educational piece of soft-power media, receiving modest attention from enthusiasts of niche studio collaborations and military-themed animation.
