Where it came from
Jintian Kaishi Zuo Mingxing, often titled Today I Start Being a Star, emerged from the burgeoning Chinese animation sector during a period of significant growth for domestic original net animation. Produced by ASK Animation Studio, the series was designed to tap into the popular idol-culture genre, focusing on the fast-paced and often competitive world of the entertainment industry. The studio aimed to deliver a polished visual aesthetic that aligned with contemporary youth-oriented media trends in East Asia.
The character design and visual direction for the series prioritized vibrant, clean line art and expressive animation sequences typical of the studio's broader body of work in the digital space. Upon its release, the show was positioned for a digital-native audience, receiving attention for its efforts to integrate themes of celebrity ambition with the serialized narrative structure common to ONA formats. It remains a representative example of the studio's mid-2010s output and their commitment to exploring themes of stardom through the lens of modern animation.
