Where it came from
Jinxes emerged from the experimental environment of the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) animation program, a department renowned for fostering idiosyncratic and technically rigorous visual storytelling. Produced within the studio's collegiate framework, the film reflects the rigorous aesthetic standards and collaborative spirit typical of the institution’s high-caliber student and faculty projects, which often prioritize medium-specific exploration over commercial market trends.
The film was crafted to push the boundaries of traditional animation techniques, utilizing a distinctive visual vocabulary that blends surrealist imagery with a somber, deliberate narrative rhythm. Upon its exhibition at academic showcases and international animation festivals, Jinxes was recognized by critics for its atmospheric depth and the precise, evocative craftsmanship of its character designs, solidifying its reputation as a significant work within the independent animation circuit.
