Where it came from
Jiu Cang Miao Wo 2, known in English as 'Nine Storey Demon Tower 2' or sometimes associated with the broader 'Chronicles of the Ghostly Blow' franchise, follows the narrative tradition of grave-robbing adventure literature that surged in popularity in China during the early 2000s. Produced as a sequel to capitalize on the cinematic success of adaptations based on the work of author Zhang Muye, the series was developed to bridge the gap between supernatural folklore and contemporary high-budget visual storytelling.
The design and aesthetic of the series reflect the industry's focus on immersive CGI and elaborate production sets intended to evoke a sense of ancient, subterranean mystery. While the series faced critical scrutiny regarding its departure from the source material and its reliance on spectacle over narrative depth, it remains a significant example of the commercialized expansion of the adventure-fantasy genre within the Chinese television landscape.
