Joker Game: Kuroneko Yoru no Bouken

Joker Game: Kuroneko Yoru no Bouken is a special original video animation episode released in 2016 to accompany the home video release of the Joker Game anime series. Produced by Production I.G and directed by Kazuya Nomura, the narrative centers on an original story featuring the members of the D Agency, an elite group of spies operating in pre-World War II Japan. This short was created to expand upon the atmospheric, period-accurate world-building established in Koji Yanagi’s original espionage novels, allowing viewers a deeper look into the team’s clandestine methodologies.

The animation reflects the sophisticated, noir-inspired visual style developed by character designer Toshiyuki Yahagi, who adapted Shirow Miwa’s original illustrations for the screen. The production team focused on maintaining a distinct 1930s aesthetic, utilizing a muted color palette and sharp character silhouettes to mirror the cold, detached professionalism of the spies. Upon its release, the special was well-received by fans of the series for its faithfulness to the intellectual pacing and suspenseful tone of the core mystery episodes.
