Where it came from
Joker: Marginal City was produced by Studio Sign and released as an original video animation in 1992. Emerging during a period of prolific direct-to-video anime production in Japan, the work serves as a distinct example of the era's experimentation with darker, adult-oriented themes within the science fiction and urban crime genres.
The production sought to blend gritty aesthetic sensibilities with complex narrative beats, drawing heavily from the stylistic conventions of early 90s cyberpunk and noir anime. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of 1990s OVAs, it is frequently cited by collectors for its representative visual language and the unique atmospheric tone established by the creative team at Studio Sign.
