Joshiraku

Joshiraku was produced by J.C.Staff and aired in 2012, serving as an adaptation of the manga series written by Koji Kumeta and illustrated by Yasuhiro Kano. The series centers on the backstage lives of five young female rakugo performers, utilizing the traditional Japanese art of storytelling as a framing device for satirical observations on contemporary Japanese culture, politics, and social nuances.

The animation design sought to balance the clean, sharp character aesthetics characteristic of Kano's manga with the eccentric and rapid-fire comedic timing associated with Kumeta's previous works. While the show was praised for its dense dialogue and unique exploration of the rakugo subculture, its reception was primarily focused on its niche appeal to audiences familiar with the meta-humor and biting wit typical of the creative team behind it.
