Where it came from
Juedai Shuang Jiao, or The Proud Twins, is a notable ONA adaptation derived from Gu Long’s classic wuxia novel of the same name. Produced by BYMENT, the series brought the intricate tale of separated brothers Jiang Xiao Yu and Hua Wu Que to an animated format, reflecting the studio's commitment to translating traditional Chinese martial arts literature into contemporary visual media. The production sought to maintain the gravity of the source material while utilizing digital animation techniques to render the stylized combat and dramatic landscapes characteristic of the wuxia genre.
The character design and aesthetic direction were crafted to balance the distinct personalities of the two leads: the cunning, mischievous Jiang Xiao Yu and the composed, elegant Hua Wu Que. BYMENT emphasized the contrast between the brothers' upbringings—one raised by ruffians and the other by elite martial artists—to ground the narrative's central conflict. Upon release, the series was recognized for its efforts to modernize the Gu Long aesthetic, drawing both interest from long-time fans of the original novels and new viewers seeking high-fantasy wuxia storytelling.
