This story revolves around the grown-up Leo and his family (childhood friend Lyre as his wife, Rune who is the spitting image of Leo, and Rukkio who is the spitting image of Lyre). In the original story, the ending was quite tragic and brought tears to the eyes of the audience, but the ending was altered to a happy one for this animated film. This change emphasizes the "bonds of family."

Where it came from
Jungle Taitei: Susume Leo!, released in 1966, was produced by Mushi Production as the direct sequel to the original Jungle Emperor Leo television series. It served as a continuation of Osamu Tezuka’s vision, aiming to explore Leo’s adult life and the challenges of leading his pride within the African savanna. The series was created to capitalize on the success of its predecessor, which was Japan’s first color animated television series, and maintained the studio’s commitment to high-quality storytelling for a growing domestic audience.
The artistic direction for the series adhered to the established aesthetic of Mushi Production, characterized by Tezuka’s distinctive, rounded character designs and cinematic pacing. While the series faced the inherent pressures of sustaining a narrative over a weekly television schedule, it was generally well-received for its ambitious thematic focus on environmental harmony and the complexities of animal leadership. It remains a significant entry in the history of anime for its role in cementing the legacy of the Jungle Emperor franchise.
