Juusou Kikou Dancougar Nova

Juusou Kikou Dancougar Nova was produced by Ashi Productions and released in 2007 as a modern successor to the influential 1985 mecha series Dancougar: Super Beast Machine God. The project aimed to revitalize the franchise for a contemporary audience, shifting the tone toward a more stylized, digital-era aesthetic while retaining the core concept of sentient mecha units that combine to form a singular, powerful combat vehicle. The series was directed by Masahiko Ota, who sought to blend the classic robot-action appeal of the 1980s with the faster-paced, character-driven dynamics popular in late 2000s anime.

The character and mecha designs for Nova were overseen by a team intended to update the classic look for a new generation, with mechanical designs provided by Masami Obari and others who brought a sharp, angular sensibility to the units. Upon its release, the series met with a varied reception; while long-time fans of the original franchise appreciated the stylistic nods to the past, the show’s departure from the darker, war-focused narrative of its predecessor led to mixed critical reviews. Despite this, it remains a notable example of the mid-2000s trend of revisiting and reinterpreting iconic mecha properties from the golden age of the genre.
