Where it came from
Jyou! Jyou! is a niche tactical role-playing game released in the early 1990s for the PC-9801 platform, a popular series of Japanese personal computers. Developed during a period when Japanese computer gaming was heavily influenced by experimental genre-blending, the title occupies a space between traditional strategy simulations and narrative-heavy visual novels. It emerged from a software landscape characterized by smaller, independent studios looking to push the technical boundaries of limited hardware.
The design of the game reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of its era, prioritizing high-contrast character sprites and complex menu-driven combat systems. Because the developer was a relatively small outfit, the title serves as a representative artifact of the 'doujin' or boutique development culture that flourished before the console market fully consolidated. It was received as a challenging and idiosyncratic entry in its genre, valued today primarily for its historical position within the PC-98 library.
