KAGINADO

Kaginado was produced by LIDENFILMS Kyoto Studio and premiered in 2021 as a crossover anime series celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Key, the renowned visual novel studio. The series functions as a chibi-style comedy, bringing together iconic characters from various Key titles including Kanon, Air, Clannad, Little Busters!, and Rewrite. By placing these distinct protagonists into a shared school setting, the production aims to offer a lighthearted, meta-fictional experience for long-time fans who grew accustomed to the studio's typically dramatic and emotional storytelling.

The character designs were overseen by Kazuya Sakamoto, who directed the series with a clear focus on simplifying the complex, emotive art styles of the original visual novels into accessible, expressive chibis. The animation style intentionally emphasizes humor and character dynamics over the studio's usual cinematic depth, marking a departure from the atmospheric gravity of its source material. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a celebratory gift for the existing fan base, lauded for its ability to unify a disparate library of characters within a cohesive, humorous narrative framework.
