After surviving the onslaught at Sarugaku headquarters, Sousuke Banba resumes his investigation of the Kagewani monster hybrids. Armed with the ability to harness the Kagewani's power, the researcher now has a means to eliminate the creatures. But despite the benefits of this skill, it has one major drawback: Sousuke now struggles to maintain his sanity, with the power threatening to consume his body.
Soon, threats old and new begin to rear their heads, as the upper echelons of Sarugaku become active once again and an assassin with a personal vendetta sets her sights on Sousuke. Nevertheless, he resolutely forges ahead on his mission, determined to track down the origins of the Kagewani and eliminate their threat once and for all.

Where it came from
Kagewani II is the 2016 sequel to the original supernatural horror series produced by Tomovies. The series follows the tradition of kamishibai, a traditional form of Japanese street theater involving paper storytelling, which heavily influences the show's distinctive, limited animation style. By utilizing this aesthetic, the production aimed to create an unsettling, claustrophobic atmosphere that centers on the conflict between humanity and mysterious, predatory creatures known as 'Kagewani'.
Directed by Tomoya Takashima, the series was designed to build upon the established lore of the first season while delving deeper into the origins of the titular monsters. The visual approach, characterized by stark compositions and minimalist motion, was a deliberate artistic choice intended to evoke a sense of dread and mystery. The series received attention for its experimental narrative structure and its commitment to a niche aesthetic that departs significantly from mainstream contemporary anime production standards.
