Where it came from
Kakegurui, adapted from the manga by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura, premiered in 2017 as a flagship production for Studio MAPPA. The series centers on Hyakkaou Private Academy, a high-stakes environment where students wager their fortunes and status through compulsive gambling, serving as a visceral critique of social hierarchy and meritocracy. The project was conceived to translate the manga's intense psychological tension and flamboyant character designs into a high-octane visual experience.
The animation direction under Yuichiro Hayashi focused on exaggerated, grotesque facial expressions and stylized lighting to emphasize the mania of the characters. By utilizing a distinct, high-contrast palette and dynamic camera angles, MAPPA sought to mirror the unpredictable nature of the games. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its unconventional aesthetic and the central performance of the protagonist, Yumeko Jabami, solidifying its place as a standout entry in the gambling-themed genre.
