Where it came from
Kakegurui Twin was produced by MAPPA as an original net animation, released in 2022 as a prequel to the main Kakegurui series. Based on the manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki, the story focuses on the earlier days of Mary Saotome, a protagonist known for her sharp intellect and gambling prowess. The production aimed to expand the high-stakes, psychological atmosphere established in the original series while exploring the power dynamics of Hyakkaou Private Academy before the arrival of Yumeko Jabami.
The animation reflects the signature visual style associated with the franchise, utilizing exaggerated character expressions and vibrant color palettes to highlight the intensity of the gambling matches. Directed by Kaori Makita with series composition by Shigeru Murakoshi, the adaptation was designed to capture the frantic tension of the manga's aesthetic. Upon its release, it was generally well-received by fans of the series for its faithfulness to the source material and its effective portrayal of Mary's rise within the academy's hierarchy.
