KAMAKURA STYLE

Kamakura-bori, or Kamakura-style carving, originated during the Kamakura period in the late 12th to 14th centuries. It emerged as a synthesis of imported Chinese Song Dynasty lacquerware techniques and the aesthetic sensibilities of the Zen Buddhist monks and the rising samurai class. Initially, craftsmen sought to emulate the ornate, deeply carved red lacquer vessels arriving from China, but they adapted the process to utilize native Japanese Katsura wood, resulting in a more rugged and sculptural quality that appealed to the disciplined minimalism favored by local patrons.

The distinctive design process involves carving intricate, bold motifs into seasoned wood before applying multiple layers of dark or vermillion lacquer. The finished pieces are often polished to reveal the wood grain within the carved recesses, creating a sharp contrast between the smooth, glossy surfaces and the textured, dark depths. Historically centered in the city of Kamakura, the craft was highly regarded for its durability and was frequently employed to create liturgical objects for temples, as well as practical household items for the military elite who valued its combination of decorative elegance and functional strength.
