A video work inspired by the "meaning, form and origin" of kanji, reinterpreted and archived using the technique of stop-motion animation. A project that began with the realization that it is the "likeness" drawn out by the imagination that is the essence of kanji.

Where it came from
Kanjigram is a short-form animated production by the independent Japanese studio TECARAT, released as an original net animation. It was designed to serve as an educational and artistic bridge for viewers interested in the intricacies of the Japanese writing system, specifically kanji characters, utilizing the studio’s characteristic stop-motion and tactile aesthetic style to make abstract linguistic concepts feel grounded and tangible.
The project reflects TECARAT’s broader commitment to 'craft animation,' a movement that prioritizes physical textures and handcrafted models over purely digital rendering. By focusing on the visual evolution and stroke order of kanji, the studio sought to create a meditative viewing experience that honors traditional calligraphy while embracing modern minimalist animation techniques. The work has been noted by design enthusiasts for its deliberate pace and clear, uncluttered visual composition.
