Where it came from
Kankan Karasu, or 'Clinking Crow,' emerged from the long-running NHK educational program Minna no Uta, which has served as a cultural fixture in Japan since 1961. This particular piece originates from the late 1970s, a period when the network frequently experimented with distinct animation styles to engage younger audiences with traditional music and folklore, reflecting a broader effort to preserve Japanese folk sensibilities through contemporary broadcast media.
The character design and accompanying animation were crafted by the acclaimed illustrator and filmmaker Tadanori Yokoo. Known for his psychedelic and avant-garde aesthetic, Yokoo aimed to inject a sense of visual complexity and surrealism into the television format, moving away from standard children's imagery. The work received significant attention for its striking, slightly haunting visual narrative, and it remains a cult highlight within the vast archives of the NHK musical catalog.
