Four years have passed since the initial outbreak of the Unknown virus epidemic, and the terrifying plague which depopulated the Tohoku region of Japan has been reduced to a mere memory, thanks to drastic quarantine measures coupled with an effective vaccine.
But the Unknown virus is not dead yet and soon, very soon, an unescapable doom will fall upon Wataru Ayase and his family and friends, trapping them inside the "Hell on Earth" madhouse which originally was their home city, Tokyo...

Where it came from
Kansen 3: Shuto Houkai was produced by the independent studio Suzuki Mirano and released in 2010. It serves as the third entry in the Kansen series, a collection of adult-oriented original video animations that gained a modest following within niche underground animation circles for its focus on biological horror and disaster themes. The project emerged during a period of experimentation for small-scale studios looking to leverage high-concept, grotesque imagery to distinguish their titles within the competitive Japanese direct-to-video market.
The production design reflects the studio's preference for visceral, hand-drawn character designs and atmospheric environments intended to evoke a sense of urban collapse. By utilizing a stripped-back approach to animation, Suzuki Mirano aimed to maximize the impact of the series' darker narrative beats. While the series remained a relatively obscure title outside of Japan, it is noted among aficionados of the genre for its commitment to a specific, unsettling aesthetic that defines the broader Kansen production philosophy.
