Katte ni Kaizou Specials

The Katte ni Kaizou Specials were released in 2011 as a three-part original video animation series produced by studio Shaft. The project serves as an adaptation of Kumeta Koji’s surreal manga series, which ran from 1998 to 2002. By the time of this adaptation, the studio had already developed a distinct visual language through its work on other Kumeta properties, leading to an aesthetic that leans heavily into rapid-fire editing, experimental typography, and dense, referential humor that mimics the source material's frantic energy.

Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, the series was designed to capture the offbeat, satirical tone of the original manga while leaning into the studio’s signature avant-garde style. The production was well-received by fans of the author's work for its faithful preservation of the cynical and nonsensical narrative structure. While it functioned as a nostalgic revival for readers who followed the manga during its initial run, the project also cemented the collaboration between the director and the original author, setting the stage for their subsequent shared creative output.
