Where it came from
Released in 2010, this special collaboration between the J1 League football club Kawasaki Frontale and the dark comedy anime Tentai Senshi Sunred represents a unique intersection of Japanese pop culture and professional sports marketing. The project was conceived to celebrate the club's deep ties to Kawasaki City, the setting for the series, where the protagonist Sunred resides. By bridging the local football scene with a beloved parody of the tokusatsu genre, the release served as a creative promotional campaign to build community engagement and local pride.
The collaboration features stylistic crossovers, utilizing the distinct aesthetic of the Sunred anime, which is known for its grounded, domestic take on the classic hero-versus-villain trope. The production, handled by studio AIC A.S.T.A., leans into the comedic contrast of a world-saving hero balancing his duties with mundane life in the city. The merchandise and associated media were received as a clever piece of local branding, effectively cementing the club's association with the city's identity through the lens of anime culture.
