Kay's Daily Doodles: The Metal Crab and the Spiral Conch

Kay's Daily Doodles: The Metal Crab and the Spiral Conch was produced by Gravity Well and released as an original net animation (ONA). This project emerged from a trend in the early 2020s where digital studios leveraged minimalist, experimental short-form storytelling to showcase their technical prowess in non-photorealistic rendering. The production was intended to contrast rigid, industrial geometric shapes with the organic, fluid motions of sea life, serving as a stylistic exercise for the studio's animation team.

The character design was spearheaded by Gravity Well’s lead visual artists, who aimed to explore the thematic tension between mechanical artifice and natural biology. By stripping away complex backgrounds, the animators focused on the interplay of light and texture on metallic and shell-like surfaces. The piece was well-received within animation circles for its deliberate pacing and clever use of sound design, often cited in design portfolios as a successful example of atmospheric, short-form digital art.
