Where it came from
Kidou Senshi Gundam-san originated as a parody four-panel manga by Hideki Ohwada, first serialized in Gundam Ace in 2001. The work reimagines the iconic characters of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, specifically Char Aznable and the crew of the White Base, in absurd, slapstick situations that deconstruct the gravitas of the source material. Its adaptation into animated segments, often screened as part of the WALL-G installation series at Gundam Base locations, serves to provide a comedic contrast to the main franchise entries, focusing on the human quirks of legendary mobile suit pilots.
The WALL-G format was developed by Sunrise and Bandai Namco to offer immersive, limited-run visual experiences within the Gundam Base retail and museum spaces. These shorts utilize the unique, large-scale display surfaces of the facilities to broadcast content that ranges from promotional trailers to original comedic vignettes. The Gundam-san shorts are characterized by a simplified, exaggerated art style that remains faithful to Ohwada’s manga while utilizing the voice talent from the original anime series to enhance the humor through unexpected, grounded character portrayals.
