Where it came from
Kikaider 01: The Animation was produced in 2001 by Studio Shaft as a direct-to-video follow-up to the 2000 television series adaptation of Shotaro Ishinomori's classic tokusatsu manga. The series serves as a canonical conclusion to the Kikaider saga, centering on the titular android's transition into the successor model, Ichiro, while navigating the complex struggle against the DARK organization and the Hakaider Squad. It was crafted to appeal to both long-time fans of the 1970s source material and a new generation of anime viewers.
The visual direction for the OVA reflected a shift toward the more stylized, atmospheric aesthetic that would eventually become a hallmark of Studio Shaft's work in the following decade. By blending the melancholic, character-driven narrative of Ishinomori's original vision with a modernized, sharp character design, the production sought to emphasize the existential dilemma of machines forced to grapple with human emotion. While the series maintains a niche following, it is noted by enthusiasts for its faithfulness to the thematic weight of the Kikaider legacy.
