Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning

Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning was released in 1996 as the second feature-length film in the franchise, serving as a nostalgic follow-up to the popular 1980s manga and television series. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the film was designed to provide a more mature conclusion to the romantic triangle between Kyosuke Kasuga, Madoka Ayukawa, and Hikaru Hiyama, shifting the tone from the lighthearted supernatural comedy of the television run to a contemplative drama set in the characters' early twenties.

The production sought to update the aesthetic of the series for the mid-nineties, featuring character designs that leaned into the sleeker, more refined animation style of the era. While fans of the original series appreciated the closure offered by the film's narrative, it remains a distinct entry that reflects the transition of the late-eighties aesthetic into the more polished animation techniques that defined Studio Pierrot's work in the subsequent decade.
