Where it came from
Kimama ni Idol, released in 1990, was produced by Toei Animation as a direct-to-video original video animation. It serves as a classic example of the idol-themed anime craze prevalent in Japan during the late 1980s and early 1990s, capturing the industry's fascination with the intersection of pop music stardom and animated narratives.
The OVA was directed by Tsuneo Tominaga and featured character designs by Minoru Maeda, a veteran animator known for his significant contributions to the Dragon Ball franchise. The production sought to deliver a lighthearted, comedic perspective on the competitive entertainment industry, though it remains a niche entry in the Toei catalog, often remembered more for its aesthetic ties to the era than for widespread critical acclaim.
