Where it came from
Kimi dake ni Motetainda, or I Want to Be Popular Only With You, was produced by Studio Signal.MD and released in 2019. It originated as a collaborative project involving Yasushi Akimoto, the prolific producer behind AKB48, who conceptualized the narrative. The film was directed by Shun Kudo and features character designs by Majiro, aiming to blend the aesthetics of high school rom-coms with the thematic tropes common in idol-centered anime franchises.
The film follows five high school boys who, despite their individual personality quirks, come together to participate in a competition to become popular. While the project leaned heavily on its connection to Akimoto's signature style of idol development and ensemble storytelling, it was received as a niche entry in the genre. Its design choices prioritize soft, expressive character animation typical of the late 2010s studio output, focusing on themes of social anxiety and self-improvement.
