Where it came from
Released in 2012, this two-part original video animation adapts the Black Magic Murder Case arc from the long-running Kindaichi Case Files manga series by Yozaburo Kanari and Fumiya Sato. Produced by Toei Animation, the project was intended to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, serving as a darker, atmospheric return to the classic locked-room mystery style that defined the series in the 1990s.
The production sought to maintain the visual fidelity of the manga while leaning into the gothic, ritualistic aesthetic of the source material. Directed by Daisuke Nishio, the animation emphasizes the eerie, isolated setting of the village where the story unfolds. Upon release, it was well-received by established fans for its faithful adaptation of the complex plot twists and its commitment to the mature, suspense-driven tone that distinguishes Kindaichi from lighter detective fare.
