Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover

Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover is a computer-animated film produced by Square Enix and released in 2017 as part of the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue collection. Directed by Tetsuya Nomura, the project was created to provide essential narrative context for the mobile title Kingdom Hearts Union χ, offering a perspective on the series' enigmatic Foretellers and the events leading up to the legendary Keyblade War. The film utilizes the same high-end engine technology found in later entries of the series, marking a transition toward the visual standards established for the franchise's third main installment.

The production was designed to bridge the complex lore gap between the browser-based origin story and the overarching series plot. Nomura sought to portray the internal fractures and mounting paranoia among the five Foretellers, emphasizing a darker, more character-driven tone that differed from the franchise's typical bright aesthetic. Upon its release, the film was received as a necessary and visually polished supplement for dedicated fans who had found the narrative of the mobile game difficult to parse, successfully grounding the series' ancient mythology in a tangible, cinematic format.
