Where it came from
Released in 2002 as part of the Toei Anime Fair, this film serves as the first feature-length cinematic installment for the Kinnikuman II Sei series, also known as Ultimate Muscle. It was produced to capitalize on the resurgence of the franchise, which had successfully transitioned from Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada’s original 1980s wrestling manga to a modernized sequel focusing on the next generation of superheroes, or Choujin.
The film was directed by Toshiaki Komura, who brought a high-energy aesthetic consistent with the series' signature blend of slapstick comedy and intense wrestling action. By emphasizing the rivalry between the new protagonist, Mantaro Kinniku, and various antagonists, the production sought to bridge the nostalgia of the original series with the contemporary sensibilities of early 2000s shonen animation, receiving a generally positive response from fans who enjoyed the return of the Muscle League legacy to the big screen.
