Kitte no Gensou

Kitte no Gensou, or The Fantasy of Stamps, is an experimental short film produced in 1982 by the renowned animation studio Madhouse. It emerged during a fertile period for Japanese independent and art-house animation, serving as a creative showcase for animators who were pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling beyond traditional commercial constraints. The project was intended as a stylistic exploration of the miniature world, focusing on the intricate aesthetics of postage stamps as a medium for narrative abstraction.

The film is primarily noted for the visionary direction and artistic input of Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who would later become famous for his dark, stylized work in projects like Wicked City and Ninja Scroll. Kawajiri’s approach favored fluid, surrealist transitions that utilized the frame as a canvas, aiming to translate the static, detailed imagery of philately into a dynamic, shifting kinetic experience. While it remains a niche entry in the Madhouse filmography, it is frequently cited by animation historians as a quintessential example of the experimental short-film movement that defined the studio's early creative identity.
