Jacob, an 11-year-old boy who is looking for kokdu dolls to remember his last moments with his grandmother, accidentally enters the world of these dolls.
The "kokdu", literally "funeral doll", a key element in the work, is a wooden doll that adorned the bier (a carriage that carried a coffin) in the funeral culture of the Joseon Dynasty. It was considered a being that accompanied and protected the deceased, so that they would not feel lonely on their way to the afterlife. These dolls, which appeared in various forms, such as warriors, servants, clowns, and guides, embody the philosophy of Joseon-era Koreans, who viewed death not as something to be feared, but as a warm farewell and a new journey.

Where it came from
Kkokdu, produced by LOCUS Animation, is a poignant animated feature rooted in Korean traditional culture. It centers on the concept of 'kkokdu,' the wooden funerary figures traditionally carved to accompany the deceased on their journey to the afterlife. By animating these figures, the film serves as a creative bridge between Korea's rich heritage of folk art and the modern medium of animation, offering a meditative exploration of life, death, and empathy.
The production reflects the studio's broader commitment to blending historical motifs with contemporary visual storytelling. The design process focused on translating the distinct aesthetic of traditional wooden carvings into a fluid, expressive cinematic language. Upon its release, the film was noted for its departure from standard commercial animation tropes, earning critical appreciation for its respectful treatment of folklore and its gentle, atmospheric approach to thematic material.
