Where it came from
Kizuna Ichigeki was released in 2011 as a single-episode original video animation (OVA) produced by Studio Ascension. The project emerged from the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Young Animator Training Project, an initiative specifically designed to cultivate and support emerging talent within the Japanese animation industry by providing funding and structure for studios to produce high-quality short works.
The film follows the story of a young girl named Kizuna who enters a martial arts tournament to save her father's dojo, blending lighthearted action with character-driven narrative. The production was characterized by a distinct, clean art style intended to highlight the foundational skills of the studio's rising animators. While it remains a niche entry in the wider catalog of studio-produced OVAs, it is frequently cited in archival discussions regarding the early years of the government-sponsored animation training programs.
