Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine was released in 2015 as the second season of the anime adaptation of Tsutomu Nihei’s manga series. Produced by Polygon Pictures, the series was commissioned to continue the narrative established in the first season, building upon the studio's early efforts to integrate high-quality 3D computer-generated imagery into a traditional anime visual language. The production sought to capture the bleak, claustrophobic atmosphere of the Sidonia seed ship while maintaining the dynamic mechanical combat sequences central to the source material.

The visual direction, overseen by chief director Hiroyuki Seshita, focused on a distinctive aesthetic that utilized cel-shading to bridge the gap between digital animation and the hand-drawn look preferred by many anime audiences at the time.
