Where it came from
Knight's & Magic originated as a light novel series written by Hisago Amazake-no and illustrated by Heisuke Kurogin. The story, which began as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform in 2010, gained enough popularity to warrant a formal print serialization by Shufunotomo. It is a quintessential entry in the 'isekai' genre, blending fantasy tropes with the technical detail of mecha anime as it follows a talented programmer reincarnated into a world where giant robots, known as Silhouette Knights, are the primary means of defense.
The 2017 television adaptation was produced by studio 8-bit and directed by Yusuke Yamamoto. The production sought to emphasize the engineering aspects of the mecha, focusing on the protagonist's obsession with building and improving these machines. Upon release, the series was noted by critics for its distinctive visual marriage of high-fantasy aesthetics and industrial machinery, ultimately finding a dedicated audience among viewers who appreciated the technical-centric approach to the traditional power-fantasy narrative structure.
